Resolved Question: When did baseball become so unbalanced between big and small markets?

The Baltimore Orioles had the best record in baseball between 1965-1983. The Pirates won 2 series in the 70's, the A's went to 3 in a row, and the Royals even won '85. Seems like the last 20 years or so certain teams are destined to lose, while others like the Yankees make the playoffs 15 of 16 years.
